Nessos attempts to kidnap Deianeira on Lekyhos vase 550 BCE
Nessos is best known for his attempt to abduct Deianeira. Herakles and Deianeira had come to a river which was treacherous. Nessos came and offered to take Deianeira across on his back. Once he had done so he attempted to run away taking her. Herakles however drew one of his Hydra blood tipped arrows and shot it. With the aim of an expert marksman the arrow hit Nessos and its poison mixed with his blood. In an act of vengeance, Nessos told Deianeira to that if she ever felt Herakles was straying from her to take some of the blood (which had been tainted with poisonous Hydra blood) and place it on some of Herakles' clothing.
