The Augean stables were a horse stable which held 3,000 head of cattle and which until Herakles arrived for his fifth labor had not been cleaned for 30 years. Herakles for his fifth labor was assigned to clean the stables in one day. Herakles succeeded in doing this by altering the course of two rivers the Alpheios and Peneios which washed away.
