Asklepios (Greek: Ασκληπιος) was the god of medicine and doctors. He was the son of Apollo, the god of healing and plague.
Reign[]
Asklepios was the god of medicine and doctors. Even though his mother was a mortal, he was born a god and a great one at that. He was taught the art of medicine by Chiron and eventually learned to raise the dead. This "gift", however, was the cause of his death.
Mythology[]
Asklepios was born to the god Apollo and the mortal princess of the Lapiths, Coronis, daughter of Phlegyas. After Coronis was impregnated with Asklepios, she was killed for being unfaithful to Apollo. However, before Coronis' body was burned, Apollo saved their son and was given to the centaur, Chiron, to be raised. He was taught the art of medicines and became a great healer. So great, in fact, that he eventually learned to bring people back from the dead, and resurrected Hippolytus. This angered Hades, Lord of the Dead, who complained to Zeus. In response, he hurled a lightning bolt at Asklepios, killing him. Apollo angrily took revenge by killing the Cyclops who forged Zeus' thunderbolts. As punishment for this crime Zeus was going to send Apollo to Tartarus, but, on Leto's request, he resented and lessen the punishment, ordering his son to serve as a slave to a mortal for one year. Apollo went to Thessaly where he served King Admetus.
